Why older Bournemouth homes are more prone to damp

Published 2026-05-07

Older Bournemouth homes often behave differently from modern properties. Solid walls, suspended timber floors, old plaster, altered ground levels, and patchy insulation can all change how moisture appears inside the building.

Coastal air and wind-driven rain add another layer. Homes near Southbourne, Boscombe, Westbourne, and Poole may see external walls exposed to more weather than inland streets. Failed pointing, render, gutters, and window seals can quickly become penetrating damp problems.

Many period homes have also been converted into flats or HMOs. More showers, cooking, indoor drying, and closed windows can create heavy condensation that looks like a building defect unless ventilation and occupancy are assessed properly.

The answer is not always more damp proofing. The right diagnosis may involve ventilation changes, external maintenance, timber checks, drainage improvements, or targeted treatment once the moisture source is confirmed.
